Pornography addiction has never been more widespread than it is today. Erectile dysfunction caused by pornography use is now being seen even in young, physically healthy men. With the advent of internet pornography—accessible instantly on cell phones—it’s possible to get a quick dopamine hit any time, anywhere. Unlike other addictions, you can return to your daily life as if nothing happened, and no one is the wiser.
The secrecy of this habit—often hidden in bathrooms or behind locked doors, on laptops, cellphones, or tablets—makes the craving even stronger and harder to overcome, or even to want to overcome. No one knows about it, it’s done in private, and you can delete your browser history, so it’s like it never happened. Right? …Right?
What if it’s not? What if the imprint it leaves on your brain and body lasts longer and runs deeper than you realize? What if pornography becomes a cornerstone of your life, and you start pushing away real relationships and experiences just to chase that next dopamine rush? What if the content you’re viewing starts to spiral, and you become concerned about the legal implications of what you’re seeing?
You can go down this rabbit hole slowly or quickly, but for many men, the destination is darker and more extreme than they ever expected—sometimes involving violent, exploitative, or even illegal content. Some men continue down this slippery slope and find themselves acting out sexually in unlawful ways.
The longer and more frequently you consume pornographic content, the more extreme that content must become to produce the same “high” it once did. If you’re reading this and have struggled with pornography addiction, you may be nodding along. You’re not alone. Many people admit that the scope and intensity of their viewing habits have escalated far beyond anything they once found comfortable—or even tolerable—years ago.
Extreme BDSM, rape-themed content, child sexual exploitation, bestiality, and “family-themed” pornography are increasingly common in this downward spiral. Yet now, only those extremes create the same excitement that mainstream content once did. You might try to “tone it down” and watch something more “normal,” only to become frustrated and crave that stronger rush again. That’s when you realize you have a problem—a problem spinning out of your control.
Because of the secretive nature of pornography consumption, you know you have a problem long before anyone else does. You are not alone—and most importantly, it is not beyond help.
At the Hallam Law Group, we understand pornography addiction and its profound effects on your mental health, relationships, motivation, and overall life. Pornography addiction can even lead to criminal charges, and you may now be wondering how you got here—and how to stop. We can help you find that way out.
In my 28 years of practice, I have yet to encounter a client addicted to child pornography who was not, at some point, sexually abused, molested, or harmed during their formative years—by a peer, a family member, a friend’s parent, or another trusted individual. Many have repressed these memories or avoid discussing them due to the deep shame they carry, especially in cases of male-on-male assault.
It may feel impossible to face and conquer this darkness that feels like it’s swallowing your soul. But you are not alone. You can stand up to it. You can break free from the shadows and shed both the addiction and the secrecy that feeds it. I want to meet you in this moment and encourage you to fight.
If your pornography addiction has led to criminal charges, your first call should be to the Hallam Law Group. We understand what you’re going through, and we can help you. Please contact us when you’re ready. We’re here for you.
